During my 10 year career in Intellectual Property, I have taken it upon myself to gain experience with many types of technologies. This broad experience working as a patent examiner and as a patent agent adds an important perspective for preparing and prosecuting patent applications. By thinking critically about the invention and writing the application with a unique perspective on how a patent examiner views the application and claims, I help clients maximize their chances of receiving a patent. By adopting a consultative approach with clients, I help bridge the gaps between their expertise and the technical nature of patent applications. I welcome working alongside clients who involve themselves with the patent work, and strive to maintain a clear an open dialog throughout the process. For clients who need rapid prototyping and design consultation, I work with local 3D printing and design experts to refine and prototype their designs.
Background and Experience:
I received a B.S. in Physics from the University of Florida in 2007 and immediately embarked on a career in Intellectual Property, taking a position as a Patent Examiner at the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office. As a Patent Examiner, I examined applications with mechanical and electrical functionality, focusing on technologies related to thermal measuring and testing, photography, and image sensor applications. These technologies involved a variety of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and physical science disciplines.
After nearly 6 years as an Examiner, I decided to broaden my experience and pursue a career as a Patent Agent at multi-national law firm. With a diverse background of examining patent applications in electrical and mechanical technology areas, I continued diversifying my technical experience by working with inventors of all sizes on technologies related to video and image encoding, scientific and optical equipment, consumer goods, medical devices and medical imaging, semiconductor processing, and hybrid drivetrain technology. During this time I was included on several litigation teams preparing Inter Partes Review (IPR) petitions and assisting with researching and preparing infringement contentions.
Additionally, I have worked as a Patent Analyst providing opinions on international patent applications under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), working on a broad variety of technologies including virtual reality, medical devices, renewable energy, and image sensors
With a physics background and diverse work experience, Bret is comfortable research, preparing, and prosecuting a variety of technologies including mechanical- and electrical-based inventions.
